Untitled Document
Over the last 30 years, I have played on nearly 600 movie soundtracks, countless TV episodes, records and jingles, live concerts and musical theater productions. Occasionally, a composer will make a special request of my various “Kujala-isms” and write specifically for me in his or her project.

No composer has made more use of my effects than my good friend and Oscar-nominated composer Thomas Newman.[Link to IMDB listing] Because of the obvious copyright issues I cannot include excerpts of the actual soundbites here on my site, so what follows instead is a listing of the 30 Thomas Newman movie soundtracks I have played on, in chronological order of release. I have had the honor of playing all of the orchestral flute solos on these magnificent scores – as well as being “turned loose” in the iso-booth for the “pre-record” small group sessions that frequently precede the larger orchestra scoring sessions on Tom’s projects. During these pre-records, I am frequently called upon to utilize my Fretless Flute technique, whistle-tones, air-tones, percussive effects, and my Kingma Open-Holed alto flute (!), along with bass flute, ethnic flutes, piccolo and others instruments.

I have highlighted the movies that feature me on the soundtrack. I have also noticed that on YouTube, a lot of folks have put up various versions of many of Tom’s soundtracks.
At some point I will find the “good” ones and, if they have examples of my Fretless playing (or other flute effects), I will identify the exact timing so you can check it out.
And I will also find the various individual cuts on iTunes that have an extra-special helping of Kujala-isms.

In the meantime, if you own, rent or come across any of these movies on cable, you can listen for me and all the other great Hollywood musicians that are lucky enough to be a part of these amazing scores by the wonderful composer Thomas Newman!
